Canada’s Gene and Cell Therapy Community is Ready for its National Moment

Gene and cell therapies are now recognized as a transformative approach to medicine, with the potential to cure diseases long considered untreatable, from rare genetic, neurological, and metabolic disorders to cancer. The pace of progress has been remarkable. Approved therapies like Luxturna, Zolgensma, Roctavian, and Elevidys have moved gene modification from theory into clinical practice, and dozens more products have reached approval in just the past few years. Investment has followed, with the gene therapy market now valued in the billions and forecast to grow at double-digit rates annually.  The science that seemed speculative a decade ago is delivering durable results for patients  today.

Canada has contributed meaningfully to this progress. Canadian researchers have advanced viral vector design, gene editing, CAR-T engineering, and manufacturing process development, and Canadian clinicians are delivering these therapies through a growing number of active preclinical and clinical trials across the country. Yet that work has too often remained fragmented and isolated, with national and regional initiatives advancing in parallel rather than in concert. Federal investments in domestic biomanufacturing, sovereign research infrastructure, and made-in-Canada medicine signal real national commitment but realizing that potential requires a shared platform where the full community can exchange knowledge, coordinate efforts, and advocate together for the future of the field in  Canada.
